About the Pinedale Anticline

The Pinedale Anticline natural gas field was discovered in 1939. Advanced technology and development activity have revealed that the Pinedale Anticline Project Area (PAPA) contains an impressive 25 trillion cubic feet of recoverable natural gas.

An oil and gas lease is a contract that grants an exploration company rights to develop for a specified period of time. The Ultra, Shell and QEP Energy leases are shown here.

Quick Facts
  • The PAPA covers 198,000 acres in total. Most natural gas development occurs along the Anticline crest, which is approximately 2 to 3 miles wide, approximately 30 miles long, and centered along the length of the PAPA.
  • Only 8 percent total surface disturbance will occur within the PAPA from natural gas development.
  • The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) estimates the natural gas royalties over the life of the field at approximately $16 billion; $8 billion would go to the State of Wyoming.
  • More than 90 percent of the PAPA mineral leases are federally owned.
